Cybersecurity in higher education is not for the faint of heart. Data-rich but largely decentralized and hindered by legacy systems, these institutions were targeted by cybercriminals long before the pandemic. Online learning and remote workforces compounded the problem as the attack surface expanded.

Join the Center for Digital Education on October 21 at 10 a.m. Pacific/1 p.m. Eastern as we talk with Bob Turner, Field CISO for Education and Fortinet, about what’s around the corner for higher education CIOs and CISOs and the challenges they face, including complicated governance models in higher education institutions and the shortage of necessary cybersecurity skills in the higher education workforce. Bob will draw upon his recent experience as the former CISO at the University of Wisconsin – Madison as he shares his thoughts on reducing risk so that teaching and research can thrive in the safest and most secure environment.

Bob Turner

Field CISO for Education, Fortinet

Bob Turner is the Field CISO for Higher Education at Fortinet, Inc. where he is a senior level strategic business and technical advisor. Prior to this he was the CISO leader of the information security and privacy program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His team of 40 professional staff and 20 student workers provided cybersecurity services including risk management and compliance, security operations center, security tools support, cyber intelligence analysis, security awareness, and information technology policy. Previously, Bob managed 45 cybersecurity consultants delivering security assessments and cybersecurity inspections. Bob also served in the U.S. Navy for 23-years as an telecommunications operator then as a Communications and Information Systems officer. He earned BS and MS degrees in Management and Information Security and is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional.

 

Jim Jorstad — Moderator

Senior Fellow, Center for Digital Education, and interim CIO at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse

Jim Jorstad is an innovative global force on the effective use of technology in teaching, learning and research. Currently the interim CIO at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, he heads a team responsible for providing services to over 1,500 staff and 10,000 students. He has extensive experience in learning space design, strategic social media and deploying major IT technologies. His film and journalist work has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, Forbes and NPR and he is the recipient of the 2013 CNN iReport Spirit Award. Jim is also an EDUCAUSE Leading Change Fellow, one of 50 IT professionals chosen worldwide for the award.
