Amina Al Sherif

Generative AI lead, Google Public Sector

Amina Al Sherif is the Generative AI Lead for Google Public Sector, with six total years at Google. Amina focuses on areas such as State and Local Government, Federal and Defense, and has a background in AI Ethics. Amina has experience working with early stage machine learning and AI startups in the defense and intelligence space, and established a 501 c(3) non-profi t organization focusing on the crossroads between security (physical, virtual) and AI in the public sector space. Amina immigrated to the United States in 2010 as a fi rst generation Arab-American, and is a member of the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities as an activist. Amina has spent twelve years in the Department of Defense serving as an Army offi cer in the Reserves and North Carolina National Guard as a tactical cyber operator and cyber targeter. She worked with the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) as an Arabic, Farsi, and French language enabled Open Source Exploitation Analyst at Fort Belvoir, VA and Fort Bragg. She deployed under Operation Inherent Resolve to Baghdad, Iraq in 2015/2016. In 2016-2017 she deployed to Afghanistan supporting the Special Operations Community. Most recently Amina deployed to Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Israel for a Special Missions Unit out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina supporting cyber-HUMINT operations. Amina holds a BA in Linguistics and Arabic from the University of Mississippi and a Masters in Professional Studies in Cybersecurity and Information Sciences from Penn State University. She regularly blogs on Medium documenting her self-taught technical career. In January 2020, she published her fi rst book An Approach to Machine Learning in Cyber Defense for the Department of Defense. She is also working on a three-part young adult fi ction novel series and is a published author with her debut novel Nadiri, A Novel Part I. Sean McSpaden is an executive level information technology professional with over 30 years of experience in the private, non-profit, and public sectors. His background includes the start-up and management of several small businesses and he has served on the Board of Directors or in Executive Director positions for several 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations. Sean’s public service experience includes progressively responsible positions as an IT analyst, and in statewide coordination, management and leadership positions within the Executive and Legislative branches of Oregon state government. From June 2008 to September 2013, Sean served as the state of Oregon’s Deputy State Chief Information Officer. Since 2013, Sean has served as a Principal Legislative IT Analyst with the Oregon Legislative Fiscal Office and as the Committee Administrator for Oregon’s Joint Legislative Committee on Information Management and Technology. In addition, Sean serves as a member Oregon’s Task Force on Artificial Intelligence and as Oregon’s representative to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Taskforce on Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Privacy. Throughout his 26-year tenure in Oregon state government, Sean and the teams he has led have received several state, regional and national recognitions and awards. In addition, Sean has represented the state of Oregon on numerous state, regional and national project steering committees, task forces, governing boards, committees, commissions and associations, and has presented on various topics at local, state, regional, national, and international meetings and conferences. Sean earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree and Certificate of Public Management from the Willamette University, Atkinson Graduate School of Management. Sean is an ISACA Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) and holds a PMI Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
