As state and local government agencies respond to a global pandemic, public sector workforces and workplaces have shifted to a new remote normal – working from home. This new way of work requires agencies to rethink their cybersecurity approach to counter threats that are targeting remote workers. This 30-minute virtual conversation will bring together former government officials and leading cybersecurity experts to discuss how to strengthen cybersecurity at the edge.

Specifically, we’ll address:
1. Emerging cybersecurity threats around working from home
2. How agencies should secure the new edge of their workforce
3. What the future holds for cybersecurity post-pandemic

Dan Lohrmann

Former Chief Security Officer, State of Michigan

Lohrmann led Michigan government’s cybersecurity and technology infrastructure teams from May 2002 to August 2014, including enterprisewide Chief Security Officer (CSO), Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) roles in Michigan. He currently serves as the Chief Security Officer (CSO) and Chief Strategist for Security Mentor Inc. He is leading the development and implementation of Security Mentor’s industry-leading cyber training, consulting and workshops for end users, managers and executives in the public and private sectors. He has advised senior leaders at the White House, National Governors Association (NGA), National Association of State CIOs (NASCIO), U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), federal, state and local government agencies, Fortune 500 companies, small businesses and nonprofit institutions.

Mark Weatherford

Former First Deputy Under Secretary for Cybersecurity, U.S. Department of Homeland Security

Mark Weatherford is a globally recognized information security professional with experience at some of the world’s largest public and private sector organizations. He was appointed as the first Deputy Under Secretary for Cybersecurity at DHS in the Obama Administration and was Chief Information Security Officer for both the state of Colorado, and in California under Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. In the energy industry, he was VP & Chief Security Officer at the North American Electric Reliability Corporation where he worked daily with Congress and electric utilities across North America on cybersecurity standards, regulations, and policy issues. He also served as a Principal at The Chertoff Group and was VP & Chief Cybersecurity Strategist at vArmour. Most recently, he was the VP & Global Information Security Strategist at Booking Holdings, the world’s largest on-line travel business, with offices and employees in almost every country in the world and whose major companies include Booking, Priceline, Kayak, OpenTable and Agoda.

Maria Thompson

State Chief Risk Officer, North Carolina Department of Information Technology

With a precipitous rise in ransomware attacks against North Carolina governments last year, state Chief Risk Officer Maria Thompson has helped shore up communities’ defenses with a focus on statewide coordination and investment in new tech. Thompson, who spent over 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and was in one of the first waves in the corps to get cybersecurity training, has also enjoyed success in both the private and now public sectors — a fact she attributes to her focus on leadership and strategic thinking.

Dustin Haisler — Moderator

Chief Innovation Officer, e.Republic

Dustin Haisler is the Chief Innovation Officer of Government Technology's parent company e.Republic. Previously the finance director and later CIO for Manor, Texas, a small city outside Austin, Haisler quickly built a track record and reputation as an early innovator in civic tech. As Chief Innovation Officer, Haisler has a strategic role to help shape the company’s products, services and future direction. Primarily, he leads e.Republic Labs, a market connector created as an ecosystem to educate, accelerate and ultimately scale technology innovation within the public sector.
