At a large university, potential uses for cloud computing are almost limitless. Leaders at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign are finding this to be true as they implement a variety of systems across the campus to serve users’ specialized needs – from research departments to the campus library to the university’s football team.

Technology Services at Illinois – in cooperation with its cloud providers and IT staff employed by university departments and business units – is helping departments throughout the university leverage the cloud to deploy IT assets quickly, scale their use as needed, optimize costs, and deploy advanced technologies more simply than they could have if they were using on premises technology.

Greg Gulick is the Interim Chief Information Office at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He has 13 years of experience at the University of Illinois in IT, where he has served as Sr. Project Manager, Director of IT for Facilities and Services, Director of Applications Services for Technology Services, and DCIO/Executive Director for the same. He has a technical background in systems engineering, software development and project management.

Associate Director of Athletics for Sports Technology at the University of Illinois

Nick has over 20 years of IT experience specifically in college athletics, leveraging technology to help coaches and student-athletes maximize their potential both on and off the field. Nick has led cloud service transitions to allow technology staff to pivot to activities that more directly benefit coaches, staff and student-athletes. Most recently, Nick has also led efforts to create a department-wide data analytics initiative through Fighting Illini Data.

Tracy is the Director of Library Information Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library. She has worked in IT for over 25 years, experiencing the telecom revolution to wireless firsthand while working for a software and data processing vendor who supported companies like Southwestern Bell, Nextel/Sprint, and Verizon for nearly 10 years. Tracy has worked in the higher education environment for 18 years, leading high profile changes like implementing Banner, migrating LMS’s, and most recently, leveraging moves to cloud platforms to drive not only technology changes, but also organizational changes.

William (Bill) Rials, Ph.D., is a professor and associate director (department chair) of the Tulane University School of Professional Advancement IT and Cybersecurity Program. Where he focuses on continually delivering and updating the program curriculum based on innovative and emerging technologies, before transitioning academia and higher education, he had a diverse government technology career delivering value to state agencies, local governments, and law enforcement agencies throughout the State of Mississippi.
